Bhimtal is an ancient town and considered form the time of Mahabharta. The name Bhimtal is given by the name of Bhima who visited here during the banishment of Pandvas. During this period, Bhima built a Shiva temple named as 'Bhimeshwara Mahadev'. The temple was rebuilt by Raja Baz Bahadur in 17th century who was a king of Chand dynasty. After the Anglo-Nepalese war at 1814–16, Bhimtal came under the British rule.

The most beautiful attraction of the town is Bhimtal Lake.
